The DEFRA Metric values habitat quality, distinctiveness, and condition — not just area. Planting a monoculture of non-native trees can score lower than restoring a species-rich grassland of smaller area.

The metric tool quantifies habitat units before and after development, but BNG compliance also requires demonstrating that the baseline survey is accurate, that the proposed habitat creation is ecologically realistic given site conditions and management commitments, and that the gain is secured for the required period. Metric outputs that show gain achieved through optimistic baseline assessments or impractical habitat creation proposals fail scrutiny.
Research & Outlook
Mandatory BNG took effect in England in February 2024, creating significant new demand for qualified ecologists. The emergence of habitat banking and biodiversity credit markets is creating commercial opportunities in land management and rural finance. BNG requirements are expected to expand to infrastructure projects and potentially Scotland and Wales.
