A hearing test just tells you whether someone can hear or not.
It identifies the type, degree and pattern of hearing loss across frequencies, which determines the treatment pathway.
Hearing loss is only an issue for elderly patients.
Audiological assessment is routinely used for newborns, children and working-age adults with noise-induced or sudden hearing loss.
Research & Outlook
Tele-audiology and self-administered app-based hearing screening are expanding access to initial checks remotely, but full diagnostic assessment and complex fitting still require an in-person qualified audiologist.

How to Practise
- 1.Practise performing and plotting a pure-tone audiogram under supervision on volunteer subjects
- 2.Learn to interpret tympanometry curves (Type A, B, C) and what each indicates
- 3.Shadow a qualified audiologist through a full assessment-to-fitting patient pathway
- 4.Complete simulation-based training modules on audiometric test administration
How to Prove
- ·A registered qualification with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist/Audiologist, or RCCP registration for Hearing Aid Dispensers
- ·A portfolio of supervised audiological assessments
- ·Completion of an accredited audiology degree or apprenticeship
