They bridge business requirements and technical implementation.

The majority of architectural work is constraint management: understanding what the business needs to be true in five years, what the current system can and cannot do, and what tradeoffs to accept today to keep future options open. Architects who optimise for technical elegance at the expense of business constraint create systems that are admirable and operationally unusable."
