What it is
About NEWS2
NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score 2) scores respiration rate, oxygen saturation, supplemental oxygen use, temperature, systolic blood pressure, heart rate and consciousness level, combining them into a single number that determines monitoring frequency and escalation. Developed by the Royal College of Physicians, it's now the standard early-warning tool across NHS trusts, used to catch clinical deterioration before it becomes a crisis.

Pro Tip
A single very abnormal parameter (a red score) should trigger escalation even if the aggregate total looks low — don't rely purely on the summed score without checking the individual red-flag parameters.
