What it is
About Moodboards
A moodboard is a curated collage of reference imagery, colour swatches, typography samples and textures assembled to communicate tone, style and creative direction to stakeholders before committing to detailed design. It's a method rather than a single piece of software — practitioners build them in Figma, Milanote, Pinterest or PowerPoint — and is a standard first step in branding, product design and interior/fashion design work to align on direction and reduce revision cycles.
What you can do with it
Capabilities
Curate reference imagery, colour and typography direction for a project
Align stakeholders on creative direction before detailed design starts
Communicate abstract concepts like tone, feeling and brand personality visually
Compare multiple creative directions side by side for client sign-off
Build a shared visual vocabulary for a brand or product
How to learn it
Learning Resources
Design fundamentals courses covering visual research from Coursera or Skillshare
Milanote and Pinterest's own guides on building effective moodboards
Practise by building a moodboard for a mock brand brief and testing it against inclusion criteria
Studying published brand books and case studies from design agencies
Pro Tip
Curate ruthlessly — a moodboard with 40 loosely-related images communicates nothing; 6-10 tightly-edited references that agree on colour, texture and mood land far better with clients.
