Learning management systems

The digital classroom infrastructure behind every assignment, grade and course resource students see online.

What it is

About Learning management systems

Learning management systems (Google Classroom, Moodle, Canvas, Microsoft Teams for Education) let educators publish course materials, set and grade assignments, track student progress and communicate with classes in one platform. In schools they support blended and remote learning and give parents and pupils visibility into homework and grades; in corporate settings the same category (often just called LMS) delivers compliance training and professional development. Adoption became near-universal in UK schools following the pandemic-era shift to digital learning.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Publish course materials, resources and reading lists to a class

2

Set, collect and grade assignments online with feedback

3

Track individual student progress and engagement analytics

4

Run quizzes and automated assessments

5

Communicate with students and parents and manage class calendars

How to learn it

Learning Resources

Google for Education Teacher Centre (free official training for Classroom)

Moodle Academy (official free and paid Moodle courses)

Canvas's official Instructor Guide and community forums

School or institution-specific onboarding, since most LMS platforms are configured per institution

Pro Tip

Set up your grading rubrics and course structure before the term starts — restructuring an LMS course mid-term (renaming modules, moving assignments) is what confuses students most, more than the platform itself.
