Google Ads / Meta Ads Manager

The two platforms where Digital Marketing Managers plan, launch, and optimise paid advertising campaigns across search, social, display, and video — controlling every pound of advertising budget and tracking every conversion it generates.

What it is

About Google Ads / Meta Ads Manager

Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager are the dominant paid media platforms, and most Digital Marketing Managers operate both simultaneously. Google Ads covers four main channel types: Search (text ads appearing in Google Search results when a user types a matching query), Display (image and banner ads served across the Google Display Network of two million+ websites), YouTube (in-stream skippable, non-skippable, and bumper video ads), and Shopping (product listing ads for e-commerce). The core mechanic of Google Ads is intent-based targeting — the advertiser bids on keywords that signal purchase intent, and the platform runs an auction to determine which ad appears. Campaign structure matters enormously: each campaign contains ad groups, each ad group contains a tightly themed set of keywords and matching ads, and quality score (a measure of ad relevance, expected click-through rate, and landing page experience) determines both auction rank and cost per click. Performance Max campaigns (Google's AI-optimised campaign type) have increasingly automated media mix decisions across channels, reducing the granular control that experienced practitioners relied on but significantly lowering the barrier to entry for smaller advertisers. Meta Ads Manager operates on audience-based targeting rather than keyword intent. The advertiser defines who they want to reach — by demographics, interests, behaviours, lookalike audiences modelled on existing customer lists, or retargeting pixel audiences of people who have visited the advertiser's website — and the platform delivers ads across Facebook feed, Instagram feed, Stories, Reels, and Messenger at a cost determined by auction. Ad creative is the primary performance lever in Meta: the same audience served a poorly designed creative will generate a cost per acquisition (CPA) three to five times higher than a well-designed one. Meta's Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns and broad audience targeting options have similarly automated much of the audience selection process, shifting the marketer's attention from audience construction to creative iteration. A/B testing creatives — testing headline variants, image versus video, different calls to action — and reading the results correctly is the core daily discipline for a practitioner managing Meta campaigns at scale.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Build a Google Search campaign from scratch — conducting keyword research in Google Keyword Planner to identify high-intent queries (e.g. "buy running shoes online UK"), organising them into tightly themed ad groups, writing three to five responsive search ad headlines and descriptions per ad group, setting match types (exact, phrase, broad) to control query eligibility, and defining a daily budget and target CPA bid strategy

2

Audit a live Google Ads account for wasted spend — pulling a Search Terms report to identify queries triggering ads that are irrelevant to the product, adding negative keywords to block them, checking Quality Scores to identify ad groups where poor ad relevance is inflating cost per click, and restructuring low-performing ad groups to improve keyword-to-ad relevance

3

Set up a Meta Ads campaign targeting a specific audience — creating a Custom Audience from a customer email list uploaded to Meta, building a Lookalike Audience (1–3% similarity) from that seed list, defining the ad set targeting parameters (geography, age, device type), uploading creative assets (static image, video, carousel), and setting the campaign objective (Conversions — targeting the Purchase pixel event)

4

Run a creative A/B test in Meta Ads Manager — duplicating an ad set, swapping only the creative variable (e.g. video hook length: 3-second versus 7-second), setting both ad sets to run with identical budgets and targeting for seven days, and using the Experiments tool to evaluate statistical significance before pausing the underperformer

5

Read a Google Ads performance report at the end of a campaign month — segmenting results by device (mobile versus desktop), by time of day (dayparting analysis), and by match type to identify where the budget is performing above target CPA, then adjusting bid modifiers and budget allocation to concentrate spend on the highest-efficiency segments

How to learn it

Learning Resources

Google Skillshop (skillshop.google.com) — free; official Google training for Google Ads, covering Search, Display, Video, Shopping, and Measurement; leads to Google Ads certifications that are recognised by employers

Meta Blueprint (facebook.com/business/learn) — free; Meta's official training platform covering Ads Manager, campaign setup, audience targeting, creative best practices, and the Meta pixel; leads to Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate and Meta Certified Media Buying Professional certifications

Google Ads Editor (free desktop application) — downloading and experimenting with Google Ads Editor is one of the fastest ways to understand campaign structure (accounts → campaigns → ad groups → ads and keywords); the bulk editing workflow forces users to understand the hierarchy before they can make changes

Paid media communities and newsletters — Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal, and the r/PPC subreddit are practitioner-led resources that track platform changes (algorithm updates, new campaign types, bidding strategy changes) faster than official documentation; essential reading for staying current in a fast-moving platform environment

Pro Tip

The single biggest waste in Google Ads is broad match keywords without Performance Max containment or strong negative keyword lists — they match to irrelevant queries and burn budget within days. Before scaling any campaign, pull the Search Terms report after the first 48–72 hours of spend and add every irrelevant query as a negative keyword at the campaign or account level. This one habit typically reduces wasted spend by 20–40% on a new campaign.
