Skill Profile

Suggestive Selling

Retail / Customer

"The observable action of increasing the value of a sale by recommending relevant additional or upgraded products at the right moment — reading the customer so the suggestion helps them rather than pressures them."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • A customer buying a product but missing the accessory that makes it work
  • Low average transaction value because no one ever suggests the add-on
  • Promotions and bundles going unmentioned at the point of sale
  • A customer who would have upgraded if only someone had shown them the better option

Myths vs Truths
Myth

"Upselling means pushing things people do not want."

Truth

Pushy selling backfires — it drives returns, complaints, and lost trust. Effective suggestive selling solves a need the customer had not articulated (the case for the phone, the cable for the TV), so it reads as helpful service. The skill is the read, not the push.

Myth

"Suggestive selling is just a script you repeat to everyone."

Truth

A blanket script annoys customers who do not fit it and misses those who do. The skill is judging who to suggest to, what genuinely fits, and when silence sells better — judgement a fixed script cannot make.

Research & Outlook

Online recommendation engines have raised customer expectations of relevance, making clumsy in-store upselling more jarring and skilled, well-judged suggestion more valuable. The premium moves to assistants who can do in person what an algorithm does on a screen — but with better judgement.

Growth Path

Beginner

Mentions the obvious add-on or current promotion when prompted

Intermediate

Reads the customer and times relevant suggestions that genuinely fit their need

Expert

Lifts basket value consistently while keeping returns low and customers happy, and coaches the technique

How to Practise

  • 1.Learn the natural pairing for your top sellers — the accessory or upgrade that genuinely fits
  • 2.Practise a suggestion phrased as help, not pressure ("most people pair this with…")
  • 3.Read the customer first: when to suggest more, and when to leave it alone
  • 4.Track your attachment rate and experiment with what improves it

How to Prove

  • ·Show attachment-rate or average-transaction-value figures above the team norm
  • ·Hold a reference confirming you upsell without complaints or returns
  • ·Demonstrate strong figures with low associated return rates (a sign the suggestions fit)
