Skill Profile
Sound Design
"Creating, recording or manipulating audio elements—sound effects, ambience, transitions—to shape how a game, film or track feels to the listener."
YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves
- A scene, game level or track feeling flat or disconnected because sound isn't reinforcing the visuals or mood
- Poor audio mixing causing dialogue or key sound cues to be inaudible
- Repetitive or jarring in-game sounds breaking player immersion
- Licensing or clearance issues from using unlicensed sound assets commercially
Sound design is just adding sound effects from a library.
Much of the craft is recording, layering and processing original sound to create something that doesn't exist naturally.
It's a purely technical, non-creative role.
Sound designers make significant creative and narrative decisions about tone, pacing and emotional impact.
Research & Outlook
AI sound-generation and stem-separation tools are speeding up rough-cut sourcing, but original recording, creative layering and interactive implementation for games remain distinctly human, specialist skills.
