Structural analysis identifies what is not working, but development also requires understanding why the writer made the choices they did, what they are trying to achieve, and how to support them in solving the problem in a way that strengthens the script rather than replacing their voice. Development notes that solve structural problems by overriding the writer's intent often produce scripts that are better formatted and less distinctive.

- 3.Study script structure using established frameworks (Save the Cat, Story by Robert McKee, The Writer's Journey) — understanding the structural principles allows you to diagnose structural problems in scripts and articulate them clearly to writers.
