Skill Profile

Safeguarding Adults & Children

Social Care / Safeguarding

"Recognising signs of abuse, neglect or risk of harm in a child or adult, and following statutory reporting and referral procedures to protect them."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • Identifies children or vulnerable adults at risk of harm before serious injury or worse occurs
  • Ensures concerns are escalated correctly through statutory channels rather than handled informally or ignored
  • Protects organisations and practitioners from liability by following documented safeguarding procedures correctly
  • Coordinates a multi-agency response so no single agency misses critical information
Myths vs Truths
Myth

Safeguarding is only the responsibility of a designated safeguarding lead.

Truth

Every practitioner working with children or vulnerable adults has an individual duty to recognise and report concerns — the designated lead coordinates the response, not owns the whole responsibility.

Research & Outlook

Increased data-sharing between agencies is improving early identification of risk, but practitioner judgement in recognising subtle, non-obvious warning signs remains irreplaceable.
