"Calculators eliminate the risk of drug calculation errors."

Truth

Most drug calculation errors are not arithmetic errors — they are errors in setting up the calculation correctly: using the wrong formula, misreading the prescription, confusing units (mg vs micrograms is a 1000-fold difference), or entering the wrong values. A calculator gives you the right answer to the question you asked it, not necessarily the right answer to the clinical question. Understanding the calculation conceptually — knowing what a reasonable answer looks like and why — is what catches the setup errors that calculators miss.

Research & Outlook

Drug calculation remains a core clinical competency despite the growing adoption of electronic prescribing and smart infusion pumps, which provide dose error reduction software but do not eliminate the need for practitioner understanding. Regulatory bodies continue to require demonstrated numeracy as a registration prerequisite because human oversight remains essential to catch system errors and edge cases.
