Protocol selection sets the parameters, but image quality also depends on patient preparation, positioning accuracy, the ability to manage artefact from implants or motion, and real-time adjustment when initial images do not meet diagnostic requirements. Protocols describe the target; the practitioner manages the gap between the target and what the patient's body and cooperation actually allow.
Research & Outlook
AI-assisted CT image reconstruction is already reducing radiation doses while maintaining or improving image quality. AI triage tools are emerging that can flag critical findings (e.g. intracranial haemorrhage) for urgent radiologist review. Radiographers who can work alongside AI tools — and understand their limitations — will remain essential for patient-facing scanning and quality assurance.

- 3.Shadow a radiographer during contrast-enhanced studies — observe patient assessment, contrast administration, and reaction management protocols
- 4.Review image quality audit cases where scans were repeated — identify the root cause (positioning, protocol, movement artefact) for each
