Measurement is the diagnostic phase. The audit cycle requires implementing change based on the findings, re-measuring to confirm improvement, and embedding the changes into practice. Audits that measure, report, and are filed without completing the improvement and re-audit stages have no clinical benefit — they only document that a problem exists.

Clinical audit is becoming more automated as electronic patient record systems (EPRs) enable real-time dashboards that continuously monitor care against standards, reducing the need for manual retrospective data collection. Clinicians who can interpret these dashboards, identify meaningful variation, and lead improvement responses will be in demand. The skill is shifting from data collection towards data interpretation and change leadership.

How to Practise
- 1.Identify a clinical standard relevant to your area and design a simple data collection tool to measure practice against it.
- 2.Collect and analyse a small dataset from patient records and present findings to your team.
- 3.Complete a full audit cycle: measure, identify gaps, implement a change, re-measure.
- 4.Register your audit with your Trust's clinical audit department and follow their submission process.
