Correct routing is the goal, not the only consideration. Patching decisions also affect impedance matching, ground loops, signal level consistency across the system, and how individual connections are organised for rapid troubleshooting under live conditions. A correctly routed patch that is difficult to trace during a show failure is operationally inadequate regardless of whether the signal gets where it is meant to go.

Digital audio networking (Dante, AES67) is widespread in broadcast and touring, but analogue patch bays remain standard in recording studios and are essential for integrating legacy outboard gear.

How to Practise

- 3.Practise fault-finding: introduce a deliberate fault (reversed polarity, missing ground lift) and diagnose it using a signal tracer
- 4.Set up and configure a Dante network audio system, assigning device inputs and outputs via Dante Controller
