Myths vs Truths
Myth

"Audio patching is mainly about signal routing — as long as the right sources reach the right destinations, the patch is correct."

Truth

Correct routing is the goal, not the only consideration. Patching decisions also affect impedance matching, ground loops, signal level consistency across the system, and how individual connections are organised for rapid troubleshooting under live conditions. A correctly routed patch that is difficult to trace during a show failure is operationally inadequate regardless of whether the signal gets where it is meant to go.

Myth

"Network audio has replaced patch bays."

Truth

Digital audio networking (Dante, AES67) is widespread in broadcast and touring, but analogue patch bays remain standard in recording studios and are essential for integrating legacy outboard gear.

Research & Outlook

IP-based audio networking (Dante, AES67, SMPTE ST 2110) is increasingly replacing physical patch bays in broadcast and large-scale live events. Engineers who understand both analogue signal flow and network audio protocols are in high demand as systems become hybrid.
