Skill Profile

Adaptive Teaching

Education / Pedagogy

"The observable action of adjusting explanations, pacing, and instructional methods in real time in response to learner understanding in order to ensure every student makes progress regardless of starting point."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • A class contains students working three years apart in attainment — adaptive teaching ensures each student is appropriately challenged
  • A learner with dyslexia is falling behind in a reading-heavy programme — the teacher restructures delivery to reduce reliance on text
  • An explanation has failed to land — the teacher recognises the gap and tries a different analogy, diagram, or worked example
  • A corporate training session is covering content half the room already knows — the trainer adjusts depth and pace based on live polling

Myths vs Truths
Myth

"Adaptive teaching means having a different worksheet for every student."

Truth

Adaptive teaching is primarily about responsive decision-making in the moment — noticing what's not working and adjusting. Differentiated materials are one tool, not the whole skill.

Myth

"Adaptive teaching means differentiating lesson materials — providing different resources for different ability levels."

Truth

Material differentiation is one tool. Adaptive teaching also involves real-time monitoring of student understanding, adjusting explanations and examples in response to what is not landing, identifying which students need additional time versus different approaches, and building a classroom environment where students signal confusion rather than mask it. Prepared differentiated materials do not adapt — the practitioner does.

Research & Outlook

AI tutoring tools (e.g. Khan Academy Khanmigo) are beginning to automate some aspects of adaptive practice. This raises the bar for human teachers to focus on relationship, motivation, and complex pedagogical decisions that algorithms cannot yet handle.

Growth Path

Beginner

Plans lessons with some differentiation built in. Responds to obvious signs of confusion by slowing down or repeating explanations.

Intermediate

Uses formative assessment data to adjust tasks within a lesson. Provides tiered resources, scaffolding, and stretch tasks without singling out individuals.

Expert

Designs curriculum with adaptive pathways built in. Coaches other teachers in responsive practice. Leads inclusion strategy across a department or institution.

How to Practise

  • 1.During a lesson or training session, use exit tickets or thumbs up/down checks every 20 minutes and change your approach based on results
  • 2.Prepare three versions of the same explanation — abstract, concrete example, and visual — and practise switching between them mid-lesson
  • 3.Shadow a SENCO or inclusion specialist for a day and observe how they adapt delivery for learners with specific needs
  • 4.Reflect in writing after each lesson: which students didn't get it and what you'd do differently

How to Prove

  • ·Lesson observation graded by a mentor or inspector (Ofsted or equivalent) noting adaptive practice
  • ·Student progress data showing above-expected growth for a mixed-attainment group
  • ·Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or PGCE with evidence of adaptive teaching in placement portfolios
  • ·SEND or inclusion CPD certification with case study documentation
