A Games Developer builds the running system a game is: the code that reads input, advances the world, resolves the rules, and hands a finished frame to the screen roughly sixty times a second. The work spans gameplay logic, engine and tools, physics, rendering, animation and networking, and most developers specialise into one of those while staying fluent across the rest. It is unusually collaborative — almost nothing ships without artists, designers, audio and QA — and unusually measurable, because every change is judged both by whether it feels right and by what it costs in milliseconds. The UK apprenticeship standard for the occupation describes it plainly as developing reliable and efficient software for real-time graphical environments across consoles, desktop, mobile and other platforms.
- Implementing gameplay behaviour from a design brief and tuning it until it reads as intended
- Profiling a build and cutting frame time or memory to hit the target on the weakest supported hardware
- Diagnosing and fixing defects raised by QA, reproducing them from a bug report before changing anything

Doing it well
Builds that hold the target frame rate on minimum-specification hardware, features delivered against milestone dates, defect counts and reopen rates from QA, successful platform submissions, and playtest evidence that a system does what it was designed to do.
Continuous — code review on most changes, QA reporting daily, playtest findings each sprint, and formal review at milestone and submission gates. This is a role where you find out for certain whether you were right.
Myth & reality
Why it matters
If the developers on a project stop for a day, everyone downstream stops with them: artists cannot see their work in the build, designers cannot test a change, QA has no new build to verify against, and a submission date set months earlier starts moving. On a live game, the same pause means a server-side fault stays broken for every player currently in it.
The hours spent reproducing a bug that happens once in forty minutes; the abandoned implementations that were the only way to find the one that felt right; the tooling written so that other people's work is thirty seconds faster a hundred times a day; and the crunch culture the industry has repeatedly been called on by its own workforce.
